Rishabh Pant’s Replacements: LSG Players In Race To Be Appointed Captain For IPL
Pant’s Leadership Under Scrutiny After LSG’s Worst IPL Campaign
Lucknow Super Giants ended IPL 2026 at the bottom of the points table, marking their most underwhelming season yet. The disappointing campaign has intensified scrutiny on skipper Rishabh Pant, whose leadership and on-field performances have come under serious question. Signed for a record INR 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025, Pant was envisioned as the franchise’s long-term linchpin. However, two seasons of inconsistent results have left LSG contemplating a leadership overhaul for IPL 2027.
Pant managed just 312 runs in 13 innings at an average below 30 and a strike rate of 138.05. His captaincy record stands at 11 wins and 17 losses across 28 matches—far from the turnaround the franchise expected. With Director of Cricket Tom Moody confirming a leadership review, all eyes are now on his potential replacements within the squad. Here’s a look at the top contenders vying to take over from Rishabh Pant.
Aiden Markram: The Most Natural Successor
Aiden Markram stands out as the most logical candidate to succeed Pant. The South African batter brings extensive captaincy experience across international and franchise cricket. He has led the South African T20I side and captained Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20, where his leadership helped build a consistent, competitive team.
Markram has skippered in 110 T20 matches from 2016 to 2026, posting a win-loss record of 56 wins, 49 losses, with two ties and three no-results. His teams have performed strongly in high-pressure knockout games—he averages 70.5 in semi-finals—proving his ability to lead under pressure. Though his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023 didn’t yield success, it provided valuable insight into Indian conditions and franchise dynamics.
Mitchell Marsh: The Aggressive Leader with Proven Results
Mitchell Marsh offers a bold leadership alternative. With 34 wins in 60 T20 matches as captain (23 losses, 3 no-results), Marsh boasts one of the strongest win-loss ratios among the candidates. He has led both Australia in T20Is and Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League, fostering a culture of fearless cricket.
Under his leadership, Australia recorded strong performances against top-tier teams. Marsh’s teams also excelled while defending, winning 21 matches when bowling first. His tactical flexibility, combined with dressing-room authority and all-round capabilities, makes him a compelling option for LSG—a franchise that struggled with aggression and clarity in IPL 2026.
Nicholas Pooran: The Franchise-Savvy Captain
Nicholas Pooran is one of the most experienced captains in global T20 leagues, having led teams in CPL, ILT20, MLC, SA20, and the West Indies national side. With 43 wins in 84 T20 captaincy outings, Pooran brings a deep understanding of franchise cricket’s unique challenges, especially managing diverse squads and high-pressure environments.
His leadership with MI Emirates and MI New York showcased his ability to build competitive units quickly. Pooran averages 69 in qualifying finals and 66.5 in elimination finals, indicating consistent big-game performances. Moreover, he already integrates well with the current LSG core, making a potential transition smoother than external appointments.
Should LSG Remove Rishabh Pant as Captain?
Statistically, all three contenders outshine Pant in captaincy records. However, leadership in the IPL isn’t decided by numbers alone. Rishabh Pant remains a major brand icon in Indian cricket and the face of the Lucknow Super Giants. Removing him after just two seasons could risk franchise stability and alienate a loyal fan base.
Instead of a complete demotion, LSG might consider reinforcing the leadership group—appointing a vice-captain with real tactical input while allowing Pant to retain the official role. This balanced approach could preserve brand value while improving on-field decision-making.
While Aiden Markram, Mitchell Marsh, and Nicholas Pooran present stronger leadership profiles, outright replacing Pant may carry more risk than reward. LSG’s best path forward could lie not in dethroning their star, but in building a smarter, more collaborative leadership structure around him for IPL 2027.
