The Controversy Surrounding Sai Sudharsan’s Dismissal

In the high-stakes environment of the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 between Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the match at HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala became a focal point for controversy. The incident in question involved GT opener Sai Sudharsan, whose departure from the crease was marked by a hit-wicket dismissal that many fans felt was questionable. As the Gujarat Titans were chasing a monumental target, Sudharsan’s early exit served as a catalyst for a batting collapse, ultimately impacting the outcome of the match.

Match Context: RCB’s Record-Breaking Display

The match, held on May 26, 2026, saw Shubman Gill win the toss and elect to bowl first. RCB, aware of the gravity of the Qualifier, produced an extraordinary batting performance. While Virat Kohli provided a steady 43, it was Rajat Patidar who stole the show with a blistering 93* off just 33 balls. Supported by Krunal Pandya and Jitesh Sharma, RCB posted a staggering 254/5—the highest score ever recorded in an IPL playoff match. Despite a valiant 68 from Rahul Tewatia, the Gujarat Titans were restricted to 162, handing RCB a 92-run victory and a direct ticket to the final.

The Incident and the Viral Video

During the third over, facing Jacob Duffy, Sai Sudharsan attempted a pull shot. While he successfully connected with the ball for a boundary, his bat struck the stumps as he completed the follow-through. A video subsequently surfaced on social media featuring former international umpire Anil Chaudhary, who discussed hit-wicket laws. In the clip, Chaudhary suggested that if a batter has completed their shot and incidental equipment like a cap falls onto the stumps, it does not constitute a hit-wicket dismissal under Law 35.2. This prompted widespread speculation that Sudharsan had been treated unfairly by the officials on the field.

Fact-Checking the Claims

Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the viral video featuring Anil Chaudhary was taken out of context. The explanation provided by the former umpire was in response to a hypothetical fan query regarding a different scenario, not the specific dismissal of Sai Sudharsan. The laws of cricket, as defined by the MCC, are explicit regarding hit-wicket dismissals.

According to MCC Law 35.1, a batter is out hit-wicket if their bat or body dislodges the stumps while they are in the process of playing the ball or setting off for an initial run. Since Sudharsan’s bat struck the stumps while he was still playing the stroke, the dismissal was legally sound under the existing regulations. The confusion stemmed from social media users misapplying a general explanation of the law to a specific, separate incident.

The Path Forward for Gujarat Titans

Despite the setback in Qualifier 1, Gujarat Titans remain in contention for the IPL 2026 title. The format grants them a second opportunity in Qualifier 2, where they will face the winner of the Eliminator match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals. This high-pressure fixture is scheduled for May 29 in Mullanpur. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru have secured their place in the final, which is set to take place in Ahmedabad on May 31, as they look to capitalize on their recent dominant form. The cricket community will certainly be watching closely to see if the Titans can rebound from this playoff disappointment.
