Glenn Phillips blasts ‘silly’ question during heated press conference after GT’s – Glenn Phillips Slams ‘Silly’ Question After GT’s IPL 2026 Qualifier Defeat
Glenn Phillips Fires Back at Media After GT’s Big IPL Defeat
In the aftermath of a crushing 92-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1, Gujarat Titans (GT) found themselves under intense scrutiny — both on the field and off it. But it wasn’t the result alone that made headlines. It was Glenn Phillips’ fiery response to a post-match press conference question that turned heads and sparked debate.
Massive Total, Massive Collapse
RCB delivered a powerhouse performance at Dharamshala, posting a staggering 254 runs — one of the highest totals in IPL playoff history. In response, GT’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure, all out for just 162. Aside from Shahrukh Khan’s gritty 68, no batter could withstand RCB’s disciplined bowling attack.
Early wickets derailed GT’s chase completely. The dismissals of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler cheaply left the Titans with too much to do, and the scoreboard pressure became insurmountable.
A Press Conference to Remember
What followed on the field was mirrored by drama off it. In a surprising move, Glenn Phillips — who was not part of the playing XI — attended the post-match media interaction, stepping in for captain Shubman Gill and coach Ashish Nehra, neither of whom appeared.
Phillips’ presence already raised eyebrows, but things escalated when a journalist asked whether the Titans had mentally given up during the chase after RCB’s massive total.
Without hesitation, Phillips dismissed the question.
“That’s a silly question. That is a really silly question. No one goes in there waiting to go, ‘Oh, you know what? We’re just going to give up on this one.’ Why would we do that as professional cricketers? That’s a terrible question. We went out there; we gave it everything.”
Defending the Effort
The New Zealand international stood firm in defending his teammates, emphasizing the immense challenge of chasing 250+ runs in a T20 knockout game.
“Unfortunately, when you’re trying to chase 250, everything has to go right. And we went out there to try and make everything go right, and obviously it didn’t,” Phillips added, acknowledging the reality without conceding defeatism.
He pointed to the rarity of successful big chases, citing Punjab Kings’ past heroics as exceptions that don’t reflect the norm.
“There’s a huge amount of scoreboard pressure when you’re trying to chase 250. And, you know, very few teams have done it. Obviously, Punjab Kings have managed to do it a couple of times, which has been phenomenal. And I think they’ve maybe made it seem easier than it is. I’ve yet to be part of a team that’s gotten anywhere near 250, so, you know, sometimes it just is what it is.”
Handling the Heat — On and Off the Field
Phillips was later asked why he was speaking despite not playing, to which he responded with maturity and team spirit.
“No, that’s fine, that’s fine. It’s all good. Yeah, obviously we’re all part of the team together, and we all have equal media roles to play,” he said. “I think sometimes an outside perspective from someone who isn’t playing the game, especially for the guys that have to now go and play an Eliminator, helps. It’s really important for them to just knuckle down, get their heads where they need to be.”
While the loss is a setback, Phillips’ defiant stance reminded fans that heart and effort aren’t always reflected in the scoreboard.
