Standing Behind the Captain

In the high-pressure environment of the Indian Premier League, criticism is often as common as boundaries. However, Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara believes that Riyan Parag has faced an unprecedented level of scrutiny over the past seven years. Despite the noise surrounding his performance, Sangakkara remains resolute in his support, describing Parag as the absolute right individual to lead the franchise into its next chapter.

Parag, who has taken over the mantle of captaincy from Sanju Samson, has faced a challenging maiden season as a full-time leader. Statistically, he has scored 272 runs at an average of 24.72 with a strike rate of 152.80. While the numbers may not reflect a dominant individual campaign, the impact on team morale and tactical decision-making has been clear.

The Reality of Modern Criticism

Addressing the media in Mumbai following the Royals’ crucial victory over the Mumbai Indians, Sangakkara reflected on the nature of modern sports fandom. The legendary former Sri Lankan captain noted that since he joined the franchise, he has witnessed a stark divide in opinion regarding Parag, particularly on social media platforms. He emphasized that much of the negative noise does not reflect the reality of the player’s character or his standing within the dressing room.

“I think I’ve seen very few players who have been criticised like Riyan has for about seven years now,” Sangakkara remarked. “There are always people who like Riyan, but there are a lot of people who didn’t really like him, especially on social media. But that’s the reality of the modern game.”

Leadership Through Adversity

Parag’s transition into leadership has been anything but smooth. Beyond the pressure of the captaincy, he has navigated personal challenges and a notable incident involving vaping during a match against Punjab Kings, which led to a penalty. Furthermore, a hamstring injury recently forced him to sit out of a game. Despite this, he returned against the Mumbai Indians, contributing 14 runs off eight balls to help secure a vital win.

Sangakkara highlighted the young man’s resilience, specifically noting how Parag performed despite physical discomfort. “If you look at the calls he makes as captain, the confidence with which he drives himself, almost on one foot sometimes to come and play, there’s a huge amount of positivity,” the coach added. According to Sangakkara, Parag commands genuine respect from both the players and the support staff, which is the cornerstone of any successful leadership tenure.

Strategic Flexibility and The Impact Player Rule

Beyond the discussion of leadership, the Royals have been meticulously managing their roster under the Impact Player rule. Sangakkara explained the strategic reasoning behind sending Jofra Archer in to bat at No. 7 against Mumbai, a move that allowed the team to optimize their bowling resources. By holding back other specialists and managing players like Ravindra Jadeja—who is currently nursing an injury—the coaching staff has aimed to extend their tactical reach.

“We are pretty well-versed in how we want to use the impact sub,” Sangakkara noted. “It just depends on whether you want to play five or six bowlers. Sometimes when you have too many options, it gets a little confusing. But I thought we had used that option really well this season.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Sangakkara views the relationship between the franchise and Parag as a long-term development project. He describes Parag not as the figure often portrayed in headlines, but as a “lovely, soft, gentle, really determined, smart young man.” As the Rajasthan Royals look toward the playoff stage, the focus remains on growth, maturity, and the continued support of a leader who is clearly still finding his footing at the highest level of the game.

The road ahead for Parag will likely involve continued scrutiny, but with the full backing of one of the game’s most respected minds, he seems well-equipped to weather the storm and evolve into the captain the franchise envisions.
